I thought it would be cool to try modding, and figured this would be a good game to do it on, so I read that Modding Tutorial III. Then downloaded all the files needed(WinMPQ, DatEdit, MPQDraft). I feel stupid for asking this, but DatEdit is a .rar file, in the tutorial it simply says to run DatEdit, but I cant, because its a .rar file I guess, so do I need somthing that will run the .rar file or what?

.rar files are similar to .zip folders in that they are a compressed folder. You'll need a program like WinRAR or 7zip to 'unpackage' it. Good luck with your modding!

ok, now i have another problem. DatEdit now works fine, thnx for the help. Now for WinMPQ, it says on one of its read me's, that i need Visual Basic 4 to use it, do I really have to go through all this, is there somthing else to use. Im looking for it right now though, if you know where to get it, post a link.

Eh? You mean the option isn't there in Weapons.dat? What version of DatEdit do you have?

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically[2026-6-21. : 4:26 am]
Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings[2026-6-20. : 6:15 pm]
