In less than 12 hours, I'm going to be erasing all existing notices, folders, address books, and pms in order to upgrade the message center. If there's anything in there that's important to you, get it now. Sorry for the short notice, but to make up for it, there will be a script to show all old pms. It won't be pretty or organized though.
Update: Okay, it's been about 12 hours and I'm still not done. It's coming along quite nicely though, imo. I've been doing some work on attachments as well so getting attachment management up can come soon afterwards as well.

You could try to make a side pane that displays the first few lines or the whole of the message, like in Hotmail.
(I did this, worked fine and dandy, just had a few 'kinks' in it. (Users tried to change the sample pane to somone-else's mailbox

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically
