Hi everyone,
Since this is a Null topic, I wanted to open a light topic for everyone to share a little bit about their memories with StarCraft.
š Simple question:
How did you first hear about StarCraft? (Friends introduced it, saw it at an internet cafe, or bought the disc to play?)
Which race did you play first? Terran, Protoss, or Zerg?
And what is your most memorable memory with StarCraft? (For example: losing a match because you forgot to build a supply, or winning thanks to a successful āZergling rushā š
).
I think it would be interesting if everyone shared a little bit to see how diverse our community is in terms of experiences.
Iāll start first:
I first learned about StarCraft at a small internet cafe and tried playing the Terran campaign, but⦠I didnāt know how to use hotkeys. The whole game was just mouse clicks, but it was still incredibly engaging.
What about you?

Doing my best to revive this place. Long live the StarCraft community!
I first learned about StarCraft in late 2010s. My dad often played Terrans in SC:BW, and I loved sitting next to him and listening to awesome soundtrack. In 2020, when I was 12, I asked him to teach me to play StarCraft. He loaded the first mission of UED campaign, and that was the point of no return for me! Now SC is a huge part of my life.
Most memorable thing? Definitely playing on the "Challenger" map against AI. This was how I learned to actually play the game. Nowadays, I play better than my dad, so I kinda surpassed my teacher:D
My first experience of StarCraft was at age 6 in 2008 while house hunting and my Dad was playing on his laptop. It might have partly been to do with being stuck in a small hotel room, but I was completely transfixed as he was playing through the UED campaign. Around a year later would be when I first got to play the game. My older brothers and sister were already playing when eventually my sister on-boarded me kinda on the sly as my parents hadn't given express permission for me to play. I think she just wanted someone to play with who she knew she'd be better than, but little did she know I would go on to be the most skilled player in the family!
None.
1998. A demo found on a Maximum PC disc that came with the magazine. Terran, because that's all you can play in the demo. Most memorable? Honestly, hosting my own maps and seeing other people play and host them on their own. It's either that or typing out "THIS IS SPARTA" and doing a kick in chat. I don't remember much because it's been decades, the gameplay loop is the same, and I forget games quickly. If someone else tells me their experience with me in Starcraft, I wouldn't remember it.
None.
First time was probably '99 or '00 at a friend's house. I was absolutely enthralled with the Terran Buildings and the fact they could lift off and fly around.
Most memorable is probably seeing the popularity of my old roleplaying maps, seeing them hosted legit a whole bunch in the game list by other people will always be a happy memory.
None.

Just here for the activity... well not really
One of my earliest memory as a baby (age 2-3?) is watching my dad play StarCraft, as Protoss, warping in buildings. He said he was "making" buildings which made me think he was like actually creating them by hand (baby logic), but he meant he was building them in-game. That's seared in my brain
So uhh, it's only natural I ended up playing the game

I had some pretty fond memories playing those maps. It was a primitive form of tabletop roleplaying at the time, and eventually got me into the hobby

In 1998, almost right after it got released. I was an avid Warcraft II player for a couple years by then, and when I and my friends heard that a spiritual sequel of sorts was out, we pounced on it (it was pirate bootleg localisations first, then I found copies of SC & BW CDs - pirated still but at least not tainted with the horrible localisations that broke some other stuff along the way). I can admit to derailing my life pretty bad back then due to being obsessed about SC.

And since I was already making Warcraft II maps in my time with that game, going for Staredit was a natural thing, so by Fall '99 I was already working on my first custom campaign (that I finished around 2 years later, then revamped in late '04 - early '05).
I still consider Terrans to be my race of choice, though Protoss got their share of love later, and finally, after creating the first map for my latest project a few years ago, which was a Zerg map, I warmed up to the Zerg at last.

I kinda zoned out of the whole thing by late '06, and only came back a decade+ later when Remastered was announced. That rekindled my interest, so I preordered and the rest is history.
Trial and error... mostly error.
1998 when it first came out I was at the father of a foster home's dad's and I normally played ms flight sim but he asked if I wanted to try this new game and I was like ok I guess and the story from thereon most people know. It was both my first real introduction to computers, first introduction to digital content creation (I was an analog/VHS video creator and writer/comic drawer before then) and ofc it set me on the lifetime of stupidity I would go on to after that. I never got to tell those people what that experience did for me, and how starcraft changed my life. Actually, as far as my efforts to dox them is concerned (I lost contact with them almost immediately after this), the dad is actually dead now anyways.
I don't think I have any particular defining memory. My blizzcon showcases weren't really that big of a deal to me because they weren't my own projects and none of the easter eggs or cameos really stand out. Just seeing my dreams come to life was enough for me for a long time. I have a lot of negative experiences of course (almost every single person from my side of the community legit went insane or is dead now) but I remember nearly everything with fair clarity given the tens of thousands of hours which is more than I can say for most of my life before, during and after.
Maybe my most memorable moments are when my very first custom melee AI started working. Same for age of empires. I still love seeing my custom AI do shit.
Much of what I learned and experienced is still applied to my review process and development in present day as part of my game theory. It defined who I am and who I will be for however many days I have left.
Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.
Speaking of memories: well, creating my own campaigns / mods was memorable all along, the latest one (so far...) most of all. A neverending thrill of toiling on a creative project, polishing stuff, and most recently, reading my own iscript.txt on a long and boring plane flight to find things that could / should be improved...
Trial and error... mostly error.
