Hey guys. Name's Matt. I've been playing Starcraft since shortly after it came out, on and off. I finally got SC 2 in 2013, liked it, but the weirdness around the custom maps and the arcade or whatever it is turned me off and I haven't touched it since. Fun game, but Starcraft 1 is where my heart is. I even bought a boxed copy off Ebay recently to replace the one that mysteriously no longer works. I have the digital version, but I like boxes and manuals and all that.

Long story short, 10 years ago, when I was a senior year in high school I built a sort of complex UMS map, it was fun, but I could never get the ending to work correctly. I'm going to try and redo it. Figure I would sign on here, download some maps, and get back into map making.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

Welcome to the community! I'm sure you'll be able to sort out the ending to your map successfully this time around, and on the off-chance you run into similar issues, don't be afraid to ask us for help! It makes us feel important and not like useless old fossils.

A lot of us had problems getting into SC2; it just didn't have the same charm as the original game. But the few of us that did get into it have done some pretty cool things with its powerful editor!

Be sure you install the game using the alphanumeric digital key, rather than the numeric physical key. There's a security vulnerability in the SC1 protocol that exposes your hashed CD-key to others, and a malicious user/bot could steal your CD-key via bruteforce methods if you're using the weaker (physical) key.

I never knew about that. Do I need to reinstall the game, or it's all right to simply change the CD-key?

If you never use battle.net I don't think it's a concern.

Welcome to SEN Matt, hope you enjoy your stay. A lot of us are quietly working on stuff, so stay a while and keep your eyes peeled. If you need assistance or feedback, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks everybody! I never do multiplayer, so not too worried about the CD key. I also have the digital version, so if the disc copy doesn't work I'm not too worried.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
