I am getting a background noise... it's not present when I listen through my speakers, but it comes up on the audacity play - and basically ruins the recording.

So I'm trying to record some sound using stereo mix playback feature.

I'm not sure, but I have a hunch this has to do with the microphone. Since you probably have the recording of it disabled it's probably not that, but I remember having problems not disabling the microphone playback. Go to the playback tab, press on your speaker in the list and properties button. Go to the 2nd tab ("gain" or similar) and mute everything that is not actually an (used) output.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.
