I've been bored and disappointed in pageload times, so I've been going around making little improvements. If any particular page or action seems to take longer than it should for a database with 500k - 1M entries, let me know and I'll see what I can do to speed up the queries. Thanks!

I have no idea if having the Shoutbox disabled still makes the page load speed up tremendously, but if it does, that would be something to look. Most of my loadtimes are quick.

Try optimizing the front-end too! Look at how much data everyone can save just by enabling gzip

I would also imagine that none of these can be bad starting points:

I was mostly looking at backend optimization, which has been the problem in the past, but it does look like the biggest frontend thing to do would be to put up more cache settings on images. Still, since I indexed some things, I haven't had a page take longer than 1s to get back to me with output, and usually it's below 500 ms.

Woah

We're working on other things to fix load times at the moment. We're not ignoring that suggestion, it's just not high on our list as other pertinent fixes are taking precedence.

GZIP compression was enabled via the method in PHP given in the link. It was selected over mod_deflate because it seemed quicker, easier, and harder to break than having PHP handle it. (Damn, it took about ten seconds to add in the one line, you other coders are scrubs. :P) Hopefully, SEN speeds up.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
