Master has given Dobby a doctorate! Dobby is free!

Alright, so here's the deal. SEN has tons of topics for everything. Games, books, movies, pictures, music hell, even desktops and desk tops. So let's get a thread revolving around plants and herbs and all that good organic shit. Until now, we don't really have a topic for anyone with even a tiny green thumb, other than the Tobacco thread (there's probably a pot thread around here too, but I don't feel like looking). So, let's keep discussion of Tobacco out of this thread, unless it pertains to you growing it.

TL;DR: Anything pertaining to plants, but emphasis on growing plants or thinking of growing plants.

I'll start. Previously I've had plants in my windowsill (namely Belladonna caucasica). Nothing new to any respectable dorm, I'm sure. However this time I want something that isn't just easy on the eyes, and not easily fatal. You heard me, I want something less toxic (well, the toxicity isn't the reason, but...yeah). Don't get me wrong, enjoying the effects of a berry every now and then isn't too bad. However I'd like something that isn't likely to land me in trouble if someone happens to wonder what my plant tastes like.

Don't ask me, people do stupid shit all the time.

Regardless, here's my ideal plant: ≤ approximately 1 meter tall, visually appealing, as well as having an obvious secondary attribute, such as a natural aroma. Both aught to be enjoyed year round, or at least regularly during the fall through spring — bonus if it's an evergreen, or effectively evergreen. Annuals aren't really what I'm looking for, either; I'd like to not have to replant every year. As a sidenote: in all fairness, the size isn't a huge deal, as I am willing to prune leaves and roots as needed.

Dianthus superbus seems to be the top candidate, but it blooms from late spring to early fall; definitely not what I'm looking for in terms of flower power.

Silene capensis fits several of these categories, but nobody as far as I can tell cares when it blooms, they only want it to get vivid dreams. While I did like how it blooms during the night, I want something that I can count on to show itself off when I would like it to most. Will continue to search for it, though.
EDIT: Found one source in half an hour total of searching, describing it as "almost ever-blooming". If it doesn't pan out, it's not a huge loss.

I think you'll find that 99% of SEN won't be able to contribute anything that you probably haven't already considered. Just a guess, though. Maybe you're not the only green thumb here.

Anyway, have you considered an herb garden? Grow some basil, chives, sage, thyme. There are others that work well inside too. Not sure if you cook(guessing you're in a dorm and you don't really have a kitchen), but maybe your family or somebody you know does. Send them some dried herbs!

Personally, I would grow a shitton of basil and make more pesto than I know what to do with, but if you don't like pesto, well, then that doesn't really help you. Herbs are generally pretty ugly too, and it looks like you want pretty flowers.. :P

None.

There's a kitchen in the dorm, but I'm too lazy to make use of a communal kitchen. Also, I'm not terribly interested in the herbal effects of the plant, simply...shit, what's the word...uhm, livening up the room is a close enough phrase. I'll think of the word later :stfu:

EDIT: Aesthetics. There we go. As long as it appeals to at least two senses, I'm good. Taste isn't a huge deal for me currently, though, I live off of college food...

wth is starcraft

Well most of the plants where I am have no scent because I'm allergic to almost everything that grows. :( It sucks living in CO and being unable to be around a great amount of evergreens for more than twenty minutes before your face explodes.

A lot of grocers have rosemary plants shapes like trees this time of year, might you look at that? Spider plants deal with transplant shock well, but they have neither aroma nor berries. Sorry. I don't usually look at houseplants based on what they taste like :P

Mythbusters proved that playing loud metal music makes plants grow faster. However, I think that they could have extrapolated: I don't think it was the kind of sound, but the volume, that improved growth.

So I should put them in my car and play my speakers at the volume that's slowly making me deaf, or maybe even louder.. Gotcha.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.
[2026-6-20. : 3:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
