DF: The only game where you can bruise a dragon's kidneys.

From the Dwarf Fortress site

I'm curious to know if anyone here's ever played DF or still plays it. I know at least one person here has :P. (cough mesk)
Anyway,

You've probably heard of Dwarf Fortress before. Basically, it's a simulation of a fantasy world where you play as the leader of a bunch of Dwarves setting out to try and make a dwarven outpost ("fortress"). Think Minecraft but with 100+ people at once (all commanded by you), and with nearly all the boring parts automated (automatic crop harvesting being an example, sleeping being another).

Many people get put off from the game because of its ASCII-only graphics, or its confusing interface. If you want to give DF a try, here is a very nice tutorial (and download link) that will cover everything that you need to know, and then some. The download link in that tutorial also includes a graphics pack, so you don't have to play using the game's ASCII interface!

If you want to see some screenshots/learn more about what the game is like, see IskatuMesk's fortress or my own fortress.

Fuck yea Dwarf fortress but I'm pretty sure we already have a thread from like 2009 or something.

I always get bored after like 40 immigrants though. I get lazy. I always wanted to try a boatmurdered type of thing with SEN members as the people who play and as the name of the dwarfs. But nobody past maybe 2 people are even interested or have the time.

I once had a cow attack a bull and they would "grab" each others legs and continuously flip each other over until one of them died. It's hilarious when people fight and random limbs are chosen as targets. You get things like biting a lung and then grabbing by the heart and being throw to the ground.

It took me about 3 "Hey let's try it out / NO FUCK THIS SHIT TOO MANY HOT KEYS" before I got the hang of it.

Lord of the Locker Room

I haven't actually had the time to play DF after the big patches started rolling out quite a while ago (e.g. after I made those two forts on CC). I've been meaning to get back into it, but I find myself saying that for everything these days... just not enough time in a day.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[04:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
