Read this.

I've been wondering this for such a long time, and I just saw that article listed above. Which is right for typing? Whenever I type, I ALWAYS use two spaces in between sentences. It's how I was taught in school, and it makes sense. Using two spaces allows you to differentiate between sentences, and it makes the writing look neater as a whole. Using one space not only makes the writing look cluttered (in my opinion), but it also makes it harder to read. What do you guys think? How do you type, and do you believe it to be the correct way of typing?

This doesn't matter nearly enough to be in Lite. In middle school, we were taught one space was fine...elementary school they wanted two spaces.

Also, what the hell are you talking about? Always? Your entire post is single spaced between sentences. Noob.

SEN removes redundant spaces between sentences, Kame.

Then I'll shut my mouth. Though that is very hilarious. SEN doesn't use double spaces, why should you?

Woah

Single space. It isn't harder to read with single space.

I see Lite Discussion as a forum for almost any type of discussing that isn't srs bsns, whereas Null is just for spam and games. :massimo:

That's what periods are for. I've always used a single space, even when using monospaced fonts like Courier (which I do a lot, as a Computer Science major), because hitting space twice is bulky and slow.

This is practically spam. You couldn't possibly expect someone to carry on a conversation about this, right?

There are multiple wikipedia pages on this, and related, subjects:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentence_spacing

There's even a "history of sentence spacing" article.

See this page for an example of the "river" effect, and why double-spacing can sometimes work out poorly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentence_spacing_studies

Without having bothered to have read most of the content on those pages, I think double-spacing arose from early type-writers, where everything is fixed width, and therefore having a double space made it easier to find new sentences. But with modern variable-width fonts on computers, there's no longer any need for this.

Woah

I see this as an equivalent of one of the random polls in Null. There is nothing to discuss really, especially since the linked article clearly explains why people used 2 spaces in the past and why that should no longer be accepted. I don't see how this will spawn any sort of debate or discussion as we'll probably all agree on the answer.

And on the topic of differentiating between a SD, LD, and Null topic, here's how I base it:
  • SD topics are serious and can get very heated, most often resulting in flaming. Originally it was heavily policed so that actual debates would take place rather than defensive or aggressive bickering. Off-topic posting is prohibited, and responses have to be relatively well thought out. That led to LD being recreated.
  • LD topics are for minor discussion topics that aren't quite serious enough for SD but want to follow a similar set of rules so that random spam-like responses are kept to a minimum. Simple posts are more accepted in LD, as long as they are relevant. Spam is disposed of, or at least should be.
  • Null is for random thought-bubbles, though interesting enough to discuss in more than just a SHoutbox-like conversation. Though it has become a haven for spam, completely off-topic posts that are irrelevant are still deleted.

Move it to null then. :3 Sorry. I just wanna see what you guys do, and what you think is right. More importantly, I wanna make sure that I'm correct in my way (with I'm convinced that I still am) of typing. ;o

SEN doesn't do anything special, HTML removes extra whitespace by default. You would have to insert non-breaking spaces to get multiple spaces, just as one must insert <br /> to start new lines instead of using enter.

I use double space, but I can't even remember why or when I started doing so. Absolutely no reason beyond force of habit factors in for me now.

Lord of the Locker Room

I personally find double spacing incredibly irritating to read. And two spaces after a period just gnaws at my brain.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Double spaced as in paragraph formatting or spaces after the period? Both provide organization to the writing, as well as a clean look. ;o

It's just padding to make short assignments seem longer. A period is so small as to be only an empty space as it is.
