So I recently installed windows 7 because XP is old and all that. Among other things like removing the words from the taskbar by default, microsoft decided it would be a good idea for the right click functionality (you right click on an item in the taskbar and it brings up a context menu) to be completely duplicated via a left click and drag (towards the middle of the screen). On top of that, when you let go of the mouse click, it actually marks that choice.

Has anyone found a way to disable this? I'm tired of closing my programs accidentally or having to left click 3 times to bring them up.

It's longer to left-click and drag then to right click. ;o

Many (younger) people don't even use right click, or know what it does. That's probably the reason microsoft did it that way.
I don't have Win7 yet, but I'll try it out soon, so I'd also be interested in a solution to this.

I personally have difficulties figuring out how one can be noob enough to accidentally close a window that way.

Control Panel -> Mouse?
Control Panel -> Folder Options?
Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu?
Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Performance?

Just some ideas.

I think (maybe) this was for tablet/touch screen PCs to easily use the jump screen.
After a short Google search, I found a forum post that has the same complaint as you do, but there were no solutions.

Double left click the top left corner of your window Should disable the feature

I left click on the taskbar, accidentally hold it down too long, and quickly move my mouse back up to the center of the screen. It's very easy for me to hold down the left click for the 20 pixels or so where it will hover over the "close window" which is always first and then let go.


also, alt + f4 = faster dl.

rockz, are you on a touchpad? It is pretty hard to recreate the error with a mouse.

I have never had this problem; left click opens the window; left click and drag rearranges the icons.

Well is rockz isn't using the outof the box taskbar style. He isn't using the giant gloss bottons. I might be a lot easier to do when you have a thing taskbar like rockz.

I'm getting it consistently when I click the mouse while moving. I often play osu! and there are beaks where I'm not doing anything. I minimize it and do something else then come back by clicking on the taskbar while I'm moving up to get back to the window in the center of the screen. Since it's impossible to click and not hold it down for a few milliseconds while the mouse is moving, I always end up doing this. The touchpad deal makes sense to me, but there has to be a way to turn it off.

Left click drag sideways or down (if the taskbar is at the bottom) will rearrange.

I use a mouse, I just tend to not stop my mouse when I click on things because it's not necessary in XP to do so.

I don't think I ever really 'click and drag' like you're describing. Occasionally by accident, but generally not. As there are lots in times in windows when this can be a problem (selecting from a menu, or looking at files in explorer and accidentally moving them somewhere), I think you just need to train yourself not to do it.

Clicking and releasing the mouse after moving the cursor off of the button like you are describing makes nothing happen in XP ...

He means Windows 7. Clicking and dragging up opens the jump menu, but releasing the mouse over an option does not select it. I'm in Windows 7, 64-bit.
