PS3-like controller setup for PC games

Recently I bought a generic joypad for PC that is identical to the PS3 controller (which is kinda funny though):

The problem is, since I've never played PlayStation 3, that I am always setting the controls differently for each (PC) game, trying to find a good combination that makes use of the analog sticks, but for each try I usually get the game screwed up in the beginning, so that I have to pause everything to change the goddamn controls over and over.

So, PS3 senners, could you please tell me what are the most common controls used for Racing, FPS and TPS genres? I would appreciate. (Yes, I googled and got no joy)

Thanks!

? Did you google "whats the usual setup for x genre" ? Why not search for a game thats like the one your playing for the PS3 and copy those controls.

Eh, I said I've never played PS3.
What I want to know are the basic commands for PS3 to replicate them on my PC games. I can't guess 'em since I don't own a PS3 and searching didn't help for me.

she/her

FPS/TPS
Left analog: movement (press: duck)
Right analog: looking around (press: scope/zoom)
Select/Start: menu 'n' stuff
X: jump/action
SQUARE: reload/melee
O: melee/reload
TRIANGLE: change weapon
R1: shoot
R2: variable/unknown
L1: grenade
L2: switch grenade

It's difficult to discern controls for FPS/TPS, since each game has different features that might invoke different key options.
Movement, sight, and shooting are pretty universal for shooters though. Jump is traditionally X, and the rest are rather variable. Whatever that is most comfortable for you is what I suggest, especially for PC games since controls are so customizable.

If you want more examples, just ask, and I'll be able to provide actual examples from Killzone 2, Halo 3, and Call of Duty: MW2, which are all shooters, exhibit common controls, but also exhibit how different games will change up the buttons occasionally (E.g. KZ2 and CoDMW2 have "aim down sight" buttons, which are most useful on L1/L2.)

One good rule to follow is that if a game has an aim-down-sights button, it should be on L1 or L2, corresponding with R1 or R2 for shooting (i.e. L1/R1 or L2/R2, but not L1/R2).

Thank you very much Sand! That's exactly the help I wanted, I'm going to give it a try right now. :)

Just one more thing... have you played any racing game (e.g. any Need For Speed) on PS3?
I'm currently using only the left analog for everything (throttle/directions/brake), R2 for nitrous and L1/R1 for gears. I thought these games used both sticks, but I'm not sure how to use them two.

Thanks!

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?

Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
