I've done a 50 Km (ya, I didn't want to take the bus and pay to go to a party) this week-end and just realized my bike really is shit. In fact, it's my sister's mountain bike (heavy, and everything).
As I do not plan on having a car, I want to be able to travel through my city with my bike.
I'll probably start enjoying bike-trips (Montréa-Québec, etc.) too, so this is to take in count.
Some very quick passages in forests might be taken in consideration as well.
Post Scriptum: You must be aware that Montréal is loaded of potholes.

Btw, if possible, try to find bikes that costs something from 600 to 1200 bucks.
