Is there any way to make this possible, it really bugs me that you can only select 12, and i would like to be able to select more at a time
Might be able to be done through a plug-in.

Yes, it's possible, but you would need to create new arrays for selections and hotkeys, as well as change all their references, and the hardcoded maximum value. You would also need to alter the Select, Shift Select, and Shift Deselect replay/packet commands as they have their own checks as well. If you actually want to display more unit icons in the HUD, then that's even more work.
