UMS games tend to vary widely from traditional [[melee]] games due to the range of gameplay alterations made possible by the game's trigger system. Many UMS games place very little emphasis on traditional real-time strategy gameplay. They can have storylines, pre-placed units, and entirely new game mechanics (such as the [[micro]]management and leveling up of a character, or the infinite generation of computer-controlled hordes).
